The Kids are Alright
Tomorrow night I am going to a recruiting event for my university. I really enjoy these events because it allows me to be a part of the college decision process for students. Often times, that one interaction with someone who cares about their future makes the difference for families trying to decide the best school to attend for college. College recruitment is incredibly competitive these days, and it seems that students are increasingly aware that they are consumers. Every time I have the opportunity to interact with a student before they have made any commitments as to which school they will attend, I consider it a personal challenge to show why our university is the best option for them. These recruiting events are also a good experience for me, because they allow me the opportunity to further hone my public speaking skills. While I would not consider myself an introvert, I am not a huge fan of speaking in groups. Over the last few years, I have had more opportunities to become more comfortable speaking in front of groups, and I welcome more opportunities in the future. One of these days I will feel more natural talking in front of groups, and who knows, maybe I will even stop speaking in that squeaky voice too. I'm sure my audience would appreciate that.
